This newsletter focuses on the book "Born To Win" by Lewis Timberlake. QuotesFollowing are some thought provoking quotes on being born to win . . .
"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all-the-time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit." – Vince Lombardi "Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become." – Steve Jobs "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." Winston Churchill "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."– Eleanor Roosevelt "We are all born with the potential to win at life. The secret lies in embracing our purpose, sharpening our skills, and refusing to give up when things get tough." – Les Brown Where did I go?My last newsletter was June 2024. I had been sending out monthly newsletters so what happened? After returning from our Baltic cruise and family trip to Finland in May 2024, we acted on a big 2024 goal and initiated preparation to sell one of our rental properties, part of our retirement plan. Since retiring in 2021, this is the most physical work done in a long time including updating lighting and plumbing fixtures, deck staining, purging, cleaning etc. We also hired contractors to do work to such as floor refinishing, interior and exterior painting. Unfortunately with this major project, I was side tracked from some of my good habits, like sending out these newsletters. Then we did another trip of a lifetime, to Alaska in September. Kathy and I took a 14 day Alaskan adventure with family. The ports we visited on our 7 day cruise onboard the Celebrity Summit were all very different and enjoyable to explore: Hubbard Glacier - excellent viewing of the glacier and we experienced seeing and hearing calving, from the helipad area at the front of the ship and also from our balcony. Juneau - A trip highlight with our seaplane excursion over glaciers to Taku Lodge on Wings Airways - amazing trip including an authentic salmon bake in a remote log cabin - very special! Skagway - Excellent private tour into Canada and the Yukon with enjoyable stops along the way with breath taking scenery. We especially loved the Yukon suspension bridge attraction. Icy Point Strait - All four of us men went down the world’s longest/fasted zip line - a trip highlight for sure. Ketchikan - We did a walking tour of the port area and the famous Creek Street. A highlight was seeing the Salmon swim up stream through some demanding rapids. We also had some amazing experience pre and post cruise, with land adventures in Fairbanks Alaska (Riverboat discovery tour and panning for gold), Denali National Park (bus tour thru the wilderness), Anchorage (largest float plane seaport in the world), ending with a city tour of Vancouver. A common theme you'll uncover in reading my newsletters is that TRAVEL has become a major focus during our retirement years. That is the dream for so many in retirement and perhaps that's yours too.
Born to WinGetting back to my habit of reading, I scoured my significant inventory of self help books. I decided to read again a book I read in my twenties (more than 35 years ago), titled "Born To Win" by Lewis Timberlake. It's crazy that I completely forget about this book when writing the section in my book on reading self help books!https://www.100goalsclub.com/best-self-help-books.html It turns out this book may have been one of the more important books influencing me to write my 100 life goals at age 30. The book is almost entirely focused on the importance of writing down goals. I asked Chat GPT to write me a summary. My text prompt was "Create a 200 word summary of the book Born To Win by Lewis Timberlake, explaining the key concepts of the book and the importance of writing down your goals in living your best life and winning in life". If you are not using Chat GPT yourself yet, you may be falling behind. Within 5 seconds, the following was output . . . --------------- Born to Win by Lewis Timberlake is an inspiring guide to unlocking personal potential and achieving success in life. Timberlake emphasizes that each person is uniquely equipped with the potential to excel and live a fulfilling life. The book focuses on the power of a positive mindset, self-discipline, and intentionality in pursuing one’s dreams. Timberlake explains that success is not an accident but a deliberate process of setting goals, taking action, and maintaining perseverance in the face of obstacles. A central theme in the book is the importance of writing down your goals. Timberlake asserts that clearly defined, written goals act as a blueprint for success, providing clarity, direction, and motivation. He outlines practical steps for creating and achieving these goals, including breaking them into actionable milestones and regularly reviewing progress. Writing down goals transforms abstract desires into tangible commitments, fostering accountability and focus. Timberlake also discusses the role of belief in oneself and the value of lifelong learning in cultivating a winning mindset. Through relatable stories and actionable advice, Born to Win inspires readers to take control of their lives, dream big, and actively work toward their vision of success. The message is clear: with the right mindset and strategies, everyone is born to win.
Check out Chat GPT at the following site: https://chatgpt.com ------------------ While reading this book, I underlined some great thoughts that deserve repeating here . . . page 11 - "Dr. Maxwell Maltz, noted author and physician, has said that every single person is born with the right to be successful, but that we gradually lower our standards for success until we finally settle for mediocrity" page 39 - "The fourth reason why people fail is that they have no clear-cut, written, specific, definable, achievable, believable goals for their lives. People spend more time planning vacations than they do planning their lives. Aim at nothing and you'll hit it every time!" page 41 - "a major cause of failure is when people have no goals for their lives - something that can help them through the trouble spots, the difficulties, the pressures of life. Every great person who ever lived was, at one time an unknown, seemingly non existent. That is, until he set a goal for his life" page 134 - " I have never met a successful man or woman who wasn't a reader. If you really want to get ahead and take control of your life and destiny, one thing you ought to do is get up thirty minutes early every morning and read informational and inspirational, uplifting material" page 136 - "A Harvard Study revealed that only 3 percent have written goals for what they want in life. 7 percent have a fuzzy idea, and 90% have no goals at all" page 154 - "This is the second thing that a goal can do for you. It can give you enthusiasm for life that you never had before. It can make you excited about getting up each morning" page 170 - " Dr. Abraham Maslow has said that he found when a person completes ~ 75% of the steps necessary to accomplish a specific goal, a brand new goal appears. Life should be a series of goals, of growing experiences. Goalsetting should be a continual, never -ending process in one's life. The minute you cease to live for something, you begin to die" I will be updating my 100goalsclub site to reflect the importance of this book. I would go as far as to say you should ask someone looking for Christmas gift ideas this holiday season to buy you this book! You can find the amazon link to purchase below. https://www.amazon.ca/Born-Win-Lewis-Timberlake/dp/0842303383 Financial goalsAfter just recently selling our rental property, we decided it was important to update our financial goals, and look at some better diversification options during our retirement years. Up until now, our investments have been heavily focused on Real Estate (owning a block of four homes on the same street), plus individual stocks (the company I worked for (L3 Harris) and then Tesla, the company I most believe in for the future growth). The result is that we will be investing in S&P 500 Exchange Traded Funds (ETF).I found a good source on YouTube who breaks down investing into simple terms and seems to have a good investment approach. If you are yet to develop a financial plan and goals on how to invest your money, this channel may help. Known as "Professor G", Nolan has program called INVESTING SIMPLIFIED, https://www.youtube.com/@NolanGouveia A video which I particularly like is on his recommended "3 Fund Portfolio" to make investing simple. Funds like QQQ, VOO and SCHD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05muePC_hyo Do your own research and decide what makes sense for you. There are hundreds of options and many different investor types and profiles. Don't delay, as the power of your financials is in achieving compounded growth over decades! This area will be a big focus of ours over the coming months as we diversify our investment assets, while still seeking growth in the future of technology stocks. I'll update you in a future newsletter. Your 2025 goalsI hope that you have made some meaningful progress to achieving some or all of your 2024 goals. If you achieved them all, congratulations! If you didn't, I'll also congratulate you for doing your best.If you're like me, you'll go through phases and periods in your life where you are completely goal focused, and periods where for any number of good (or bad) reasons, you're not. Either is okay, as long as you keep getting back to them. The best time for this is annually. Make December the month where you devote some good quiet time to reviewing 2024 and more importantly, deciding and updating your goals for 2025. Use my goal setting worksheet if you find it helpful. If you don't, use any other method that works for you. The important thing to do, as summarized in the book "BORN TO WIN", is that you write them down. This will put you ahead of 97% of the population that will never write down their goals. Reach out to me if you need me to send you my goal setting worksheet (excel based)! Next newsletter . . .In my next newsletter, I'll discuss some strategies to ensure you've starting the 2025 year and goals with a bang! Please write me at brian@100goalsclub.com if you've missed reading these newsletters or if you have any suggestions for future issues.
